FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Fauré Requiem will be presented on Palm Sunday, March 16th, at 7:00 p.m. by the chancel choir, soloists, and orchestra of Southminster Presbyterian Church. This sublime choral–orchestral setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead is one of the best known works by Gabriel Fauré. John Obetz will be the featured organist on the church’s Casavant pipe organ in the newly renovated sanctuary.

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. He was the foremost French composer of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th century composers. Fauré was born in Pamiers, France in 1845, lived with a foster-nurse for several years and at the age of nine was sent to study at the École Niedermeyer, a school which prepared church organists and choir directors in Paris. He studied with several prominent French musicians, including Camille Saint-Saëns, who introduced him to the music of several contemporary composers, including Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

Fauré is regarded as the master of the French art song, or mélodie. His works ranged from an early romantic style, when in his early years he emulated the style of Mendelssohn and others, to late 19th century Romantic, and finally to an ascetic 20th century aesthetic. His work was based on a strong understanding of harmonic structures. He composed his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 between 1877 and 1890.

During his career he was the national inspector of the provincial conservatories, the chief organist at the Madeleine, and composition professor at the Conservatoire. Fauré was the Conservatoire's resolute and influential director, becoming celebrated for the vocal and chamber masterpieces he produced until his death at age 79.

In 1924 the Requiem was performed at Fauré's own funeral. It was first performed in the United States in 1931 at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.

The Palm Sunday concert at Southminster is free. The church is located at 63rd and Roe Avenue in Prairie Village, KS.

Ample off-street parking is available. For information call: 913 432-3505 or check www.southminsterpres.org.
