A HEART FOR MISSION
Southminster Presbyterian Church
Our Mission Statement
Southminster Presbyterian Church strives to be a welcoming community gathered in the name of Jesus Christ.
- To celebrate and enjoy each individual
- To nurture and challenge each other toward a growing faith
- To equip ourselves through study and reflection to do Gods work
- To enlarge our vision for faith lived in the wider world.
- To anticipate and embrace change as we serve Christ in the community and in the world.
Our Local Mission Partners
Through our annual budget, Southminster supports many dedicated local mission partners in the metropolitan Kansas City area. In addition to providing funding, we also work to provide volunteers and in-kind giving to these ministry partners. We support the following ministries through our annual budget.
- Argentine Food Kitchen serves a hot noon meal to needy persons Monday through Friday of each week. Supported by an ecumenical coalition of faith groups, the Argentine Food Kitchen is located in the Armourdale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. Southminster has a dedicated group of volunteers who provide a meal six times a year.
- Crosslines, Inc. is a comprehensive ministry addressing issues of poverty located in Kansas City, Kansas.
- Interfaith Hospitality Network is an innovative ministry addressing homelessness for families in Johnson County, Kansas. Southminster is a host church in the network, providing housing in our church facility for 4-5 weeks each year. We also provide annual funding to the network for their operations.
- Johnson County Emergency Assistance Center, operated by Catholic Charities, provides emergency food and financial assistance to families experiencing need in Johnson County. Southminster provides annual financial support as well as in-kind donations of needed supplies throughout the year.
- Kansas City Presbyterian Manor is a ministry providing retirement housing and nursing care to residents in the Kansas City, Kansas area. In addition to providing annual financial support, the Southminster Youth Fellowship has a special relationship with the residents of this facility.
- Community LINC, Inc. is a comprehensive ministry addressing the root causes of homelessness in our area. Community LINC provides transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness. Families are required to participate in the agency's Career Development training program to address issues that will facilitate long-term economic stability and help break the cycle of homelessness.
- SafeHome is a ministry for persons who are victims of domestic violence, providing housing, counseling, material support, and legal assistance to help break the cycle of domestic violence.
- Temporary Lodging for Children (TLC) is a ministry addressing the needs of at-risk youth located in Olathe, Kansas. Their services include emergency, temporary and long term shelter, individual and family intervention, educational and life skills training as well as mentoring, volunteerism and recreational activities to youth ages 11-18, who need a safe place to stay and a structured environment.
- Uplift offers care and compassion to Kansas City's homeless. The organization of volunteers takes meals to the hidden homeless - those who do not or can not come to shelters and kitchens. They also deliver clothing and basic supplies. In times of extreme heat or cold, the volunteers of Uplift make emergency runs to provide help and special supplies to these homeless people living under bridges, on the streets, and at other locations where help can not be found.
- Wyandotte County Emergency Assistance Center, operated by Catholic Charities, provides emergency food and financial assistance for individuals and families experiencing need in Wyandotte County, Kansas. In addition to providing annual financial support for the operations of the center, Southminster also provides in-kind donations of needed supplies throughout the year.
Special Mission
The Presbyterian Church (USA)
Southminster Presbyterian Church is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Through our participation and giving to the wider church, we are partners in many ministries: Christian Education, global mission, evangelism, rural ministries, inner city ministries, and many others. In 2003, Southminster gave $16,500 as an unrestricted gift to support the corporate ministry of our denomination.
Journey to Bethlehem
In 2006 Southminster brought to the community our 21st annual presentation of Journey to Bethlehem. Held each year on the first Friday and Saturday in December, our church is be transformed into scenes of the journey to the birth of Christ. Visitors take a guided 30 minute tour, interacting with characters of Nazareth, King Herod's court, and Bethlehem and locations en route. An average of 800 people every year accept our gift of the Christmas story by taking the journey. Beautiful music and dramatic acts can be enjoyed while you wait for your departure on your Journey to Bethlehem. Admission is free. Tours leave approximately every 10 minutes from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and 5:00 to 8:00 on Saturday. Interpreters for the hearing impaired will be available for the Friday night tours.
The Presbyterian Church (Yucatan, Mexico)
Southminster has an active, personal relationship with our brothers and sisters in the Presbyterian Church of the Yucatan in Mexico. Congregation members have taken five trips to the country to worship and work with the people of Merida, Tekax, and surrounding areas. Each trip is a full week of community with the people of the towns we stay in, facilitating an evening Bible School, and working on building projects. We praise God for the opportunity to experience the faith and love of our hermanos y hermanas en Christo of the Yucatan.
