Come Serve! Come Grow! Get Plugged In through Small Groups at Southminster
Small Groups are a vital ministry at Southminster, the major way for members to get together around a common interest, subject matter, or project. Some are focused on fellowship and social interaction, others on service or study. All of our small groups are intent on providing meaningful Christian growth for you! Below are just a few of the small groups at Southminster:
Argentine Food Kitchen: Southminster has a dedicated group of volunteers who provide a meal six times a year at the Argentine Food Kitchen.
The Kitchen serves a hot noon meal to needy persons Monday through Friday of each week. Supported by an ecumenical coalition of faith groups, the Argentine Food Kitchen is located in the Armourdale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas.
Book Club:
Book Club meets at the home of members for lively discussions on a wide variety of books are selected by members monthly.
Dine In/Dine Out: This fellowship for couples and individuals of all ages meets in clusters of 8-10 to share a meal and some laughter together. Each cluster has a host who plans an activity and a time to get together. Groups meet quarterly, changing hosts each time.
Garden Club: Do you have a green thumb? Like to hang out with those who do? Then this is the group for you! Whether working on keeping our church flowerbeds beautiful or going on field trips, these gardeners have fun season after season.
Health and Wellness Cabinet:
Health and Wellness organizes events and resources for the health and well-being of our congregation. Our Parish Nurses conduct blood pressure screenings on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The group also sponsors a library shelf of health-related resources and information about nursing homes and other care providers in our area. The Health and Wellness Cabinet coordinates educational seminars for areas of interest such as exercise and nutrition.
IHN Network Volunteers: One of our mission projects to our community, the Interfaith Hospitality Network, depends on the energy, enthusiasm, and compassion of various members, particularly during the four weeks a year that Southminster is transformed into a shelter. Whether helping with setup, working the overnight shift, or providing meals, this is a wonderful way to serve Christ by serving others in our community.
Mexico Mission Group:
Southminster has an active, personal relationship with our brothers and sisters in the Presbyterian Church of the Yucatan in Mexico and Frontera de Cristo. Congregation members have taken seven trips to the Yucatan, Chiapas, and Sonora to worship and work with the people of Mexico. Each trip is a full week of community with the people of the towns we stay in, facilitating an evening Bible School, and working on projects. The Mexico Mission group has expanded our outreach to the Latino community in Kansas City, as well, offering opportunities for mission work close to home. Meet with us monthly for information and fellowship in homes and at restaurants (!) on the first Tuesday of each month.
Prime Timers:
The Prime Timers gather for mid-week lunch programs and occasional day trips in Kansas City and the surrounding area. Please see The Messenger for upcoming events.
Southminster 20s and 30s: Are you in your 20s or 30s (or married to one) and wonder who the other awesome young adults at Southminster are? Whether you are just into your 20s or just shy of becoming perpetually 39, this group is for you! Why don't you join us for some fun and spiritual growth?
Southminster Men's Group: Like clockwork, dozens of Southminster fellas stroll into a local restaurant every Wednesday morning at 7 am. Over eggs and coffee, the men of the church will muse about current events, finer points of college and professional sports, and grow closer together. Contact the church office for upcoming locations.
Southminster Presbyterian Women (SPW):
For more than 200 years, Presbyterian women have demonstrated a commitment to serve the mission of the church in a special, caring ways. The women of Southminster have been doing this in the community by volunteering in programs for the homeless and for those economically stressed. Southminster women can choose from four circles that each meet at a different time monthly. Throughout the year there are events where they can all gather together for fun and fellowship. Visit the Southminster Presbyterian Women site for information.
Small Group Bible Study: These groups, sponsored by the Christian Education Committee, work on supporting, uplifting, and learning together through prayer, study, and conversation.
SPICE: Southminster Presbyterian Investment Club Entrepreneurs meet on the fourth Thursday of the month. Each meeting includes stock reports, discussion, investing, stock competition, and, of course, food. Each member contributes a monthly amount to be invested in the club's investment pool. High returns are not guaranteed, but fun and fellowship are.
